Mona (Russ) Henderson

Mona Jo (Brunie) Henderson, a beacon of light and love in the lives of all who knew her, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2024, at the age of 78, in Alliance, Ohio. Born on October 1, 1945, in Canton, Ohio, to the late Edward A. and Maxine E. (Russ) Brunie, Mona's life was one rich in family, education, community service, and the arts.

Mona was a proud graduate of Sebring McKinley High School, class of 1963, and carried her enthusiasm and spirit into her college years at Mount Union University, where she graduated Salutatorian with a Bachelor's in Education in 1966. As a student, Mona was not only an academic but also a spirited cheerleader, serving as the captain of the cheer squad and spreading her infectious energy both at Sebring and Mount Union.

Mona's passion for education and literature led her to a fulfilling career as an English teacher at West Branch, where she also contributed her talents to the drama department. Her dedication to education continued as she substitute taught at Sebring and Alliance, touching the lives of countless students with her thoughtful and passionate teaching style.

Her commitment to community was further exemplified through her 20-year tenure at the City of Alliance with the Keep Alliance Beautiful program. Mona worked tirelessly with schools on recycling education and was instrumental in securing various grants to support local recycling initiatives. Her efforts not only beautified the city but also educated and inspired younger generations to care for their environment.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Mona's love for the arts shone brightly. She was an active member of the Carnation City Players, where she both acted and directed, bringing stories to life on stage and fostering a love for theater in the community. Her involvement with the Canton Blues organization demonstrated her deep appreciation for music, as she worked closely with the planning of the blues festival.

A true sports enthusiast, Mona was an avid Cleveland Cavaliers fan, never missing a chance to cheer on her favorite team. Her love for travel allowed her to explore new places, creating memories that she cherished deeply. Those who knew Mona will fondly remember her for her love of cooking, her delight in a good book, and her penchant for anything turquoise, a color that reflected her vibrant and loving nature.

Mona's legacy is carried on by her adoring family, including her daughter, Marni L. Henderson; her grandchildren, Alyssa M. Scott and Daniel B. Hyronimus; and her siblings, Lance E. Brunie, Nanette Brunie, and Jeffrey S. (Kathy) Brunie. She was a cherished aunt to her nieces Chelsea, Emily, Carly, Casey, Courtney, and Racheal, all of whom will miss her deeply.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Gednetz-Ruzek-Brown Funeral Home with Pastor Judy Bender officiating. Friends and family will be received the hour prior to the service from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Inurement will take place at Highland Memorial Park, Beloit.
