Alton "Buck" Carr

October 14, 1940 — March 12, 2017

Alton Carr, 76, of Sebring, passed away peacefully March 12, 2017 after a brief illness.  He was surrounded by his family and friends.  Alton was born on October 14, 1940 in Kusooth, WV to Fred and Estella (Frye) Carr.  Buck dedicated his life to horses and racing.  He worked as one of the top trainers in Mahoning County, both at Woolman and Brown Stables.  Throughout the years, Buck could always be found in the horse barn at the Canfield Fair, willing to talk with anyone about the horses he was training for the races that year. Buck was also an experienced and accomplished jockey in area harness racing.  He had a unique ability as both a trainer and jockey that made him valuable at the local stables.

In 2016, Buck was inducted into the local Harness Racing Hall of Fame.  This was the culmination of a lifetime and career dedicated to the highest ideals of the sport, both as a jockey and especially as a trainer. Family who loved him and friends who knew him could always count on a smile, a joke or a cheerful story. He was always willing to take some time to talk to anyone who approached him.

He is survived by his sisters Beatrice Criss, and Delorice Boyd, as well as many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Charles, Clifford, and Harold; and a sister, Anne.

Calling hours will be held at Gednetz-Ruzek-Brown Funeral Home in Sebring on Friday, March 17th from 12-1 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 AM on Friday at the funeral home with Ray Harris officiating. Burial will take place at Damascus Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the funeral home to help his family with burial expenses. Friends may send condolences and sign the guest register online at www.grfuneralhome.com.  Arrangements are by Gednetz-Ruzek-Brown Funeral Home, Sebring, OH (330) 938-2526.
