Doris E. (Gelatt) Andrews “Jill” 93, of Sebring passed away on May 2, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Canton. Jill was born on March 12,1921, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island to Granville and Ruth (Haskard) Gelatt. Educated in the schools of Woonsocket and North Smithfield, R. I. Graduated from East Greenwich Academy in 1937, and from the University of New Hampshire in 1941 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. She took post-graduate work at the R. I. College of Education, the University of Mass., and Boston U and was a secondary-school teacher of French, Latin, and English for 14 years in New England. Jill also taught English and composition at West Branch High School from 1966 to 1983. Jill was a member of Pine Lake Christian Church since 1960 where she was a soloist and choir director for almost 20 years and later served as pianist and organist. Past Matron of Woonsocket Chapter #3, Order of the Eastern Star also a member of Alma Chapter, Sebring, where she received a 50-year membership pin. She directed Sebring Carnation Chapter of Sweet Adelines from 1963-1973; Sang with City of Flags Chapter in Canton for 20 years and a member of the Senior Center Chorus of Alliance for 9 years.
Survivors include; step-children, Robert (Ann) and Carol Andrews (Bill Durham); grandchildren, Thomas, Steven (Sarah) Andrews, Kristin Andrews Bigham (Brian), Joshua and Amy Kay Durham, and great grandchildren, Xavier and Ulysses Andrews, Lydia and Jack Bigham. Mrs. Andrews was married 43 years to Merle S. Andrews who died September 19, 2001.
A Memorial Service will be held on June 21, 2014 at Copeland Oaks in Sebring at Bennett Chapel at 2:00 PM with John Ryser officiating. Burial took place in Grandview Cemetery in Sebring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Ocean Park Association (music ministry) P.O. Box 7296, Ocean Park, ME 04063 or Timken Mercy Hospice Program 7568 Whipple Ave. NW, N. Canton 44720.
