Edwin Schmid

Edwin Arnold Schmid, 76, of Homeworth, Ohio went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 11, 2007, after an eight- year valiant battle against cancer and three years of kidney failure on dialysis. He was born Sept. 10, 1930, in Beloit, Ohio, to the late John and Minnie (Blasiman) Schmid. He was a graduate of Sebring McKinley High School, class of 1948. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Lavelle (Schafer) Schmid. After a two-year engagement they married on April 27, 1978.A celebration and renewal of vows was held at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in 1999 in Homeworth. Edwin had one son Douglas (Melody) Schmid of Sebring; and one daughter, Cathy (Gregory) Shafer of Savannah, Ga., born into first marriage; one brother Herman (Evelyn) Schmid of Sebring and one niece. He also was Dad to his wife’s two young children from her 1st marriage, John (Jodi) Davis of Leetonia and Laura (Larry) Fletcher of Minerva. He was a much loved, and loving Grandpa/Papa to 11 grandchildren, Kelly; Ryan; Tiffany; Justin; Amber, Nicole, John Michael, Gregory, Michael, Daniel, and Nikki; and one great-granddaughter Haleigh Lynn. Edwin sat on The Board of Directors at the Sebring National Bank and, after the merger,on the Alliance First National Bank Board. This year he became a 50 year member of the F & AM Masons #626 Sebring Lodge and held a 25- year membership of Eastern Star of Sebring. His club memberships included Alliance Exchange Club, being very active in his younger years, chairing many committees, as well as a past president. In more recent years he was a faithful member of West Township Ruritan Club, holding a life time membership at the time of his death. He had served on many committees during his active years. He is of the Methodist faith and held many positions at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in Homeworth, especially enjoying being church treasurer for six years, in a very dedicated manner. He was a member of the Beechwood United Methodist Church at the time of his passing. His hobby was collecting 1976 Bicentennial items which now number over 1,000 pieces. He and his wife, Lavella ,spent many enjoyable hours searching for 1976 items to collect and other collectables to buy and sell during the ‘80s and ‘90s. Ed worked in the dairy business since a youth. He managed Mahoning Valley Dairy where his dad was the first Swiss cheese maker; then Beverly Farms till the plant closed and next at Superior Dairy as field manager and retired after 20 years because of bad health. He was also co-owner of the original Meadow Brook Dairy on the corner of Shunk and State St. He worked at Thornes IGA on State Street,enjoying the people until his health forced him to permanently retire from the job he claimed was so much fun Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday July 14, 2007, at Gednetz-Ruzek Funeral Home with Dr. David Bloor of Bolton United Methodist Church and Dr. Richard Wallace of Beechwood United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. with the family present from 7-9 pm. Edwin will be laid to rest at Moultrie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Beechwood United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Gednetz-Ruzek Funeral Home. Friends may sign the guest register on line at www.grfuneralhome.com.
