Born on November 4, 1948, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Roy E. Switzer and Betty L. (Woods) Switzer, Gary's journey through life was one of dedication and service.

A proud 1966 graduate of East Palestine High School, Gary's commitment to his country was evident early on. His 30-year tenure in the United States Navy was a testament to his valor and patriotism. He served two tours in Vietnam and participated in Operation Desert Storm, demonstrating his bravery in times of conflict. Throughout his distinguished military career, Gary was stationed across the United States and abroad in places such as Italy, Hawaii, San Diego, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. His service to the nation was a source of pride for his family and an inspiration to all who knew him.

After retiring from the Navy, Gary's work ethic and sense of duty led him to a position at Salem Republic, where he continued to apply the discipline and leadership skills honed during his service.

Gary was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth (Martin) Switzer, and is survived by his devoted daughter, Dawn Switzer. His twin sister, Karen (Robert) Hatfield, also shares in the legacy of his memory. Gary was a cherished grandfather to Aunisty Switzer and a loving companion to his granddog, Ahsoka, both of whom brought him immense joy and companionship.

Those who knew Gary will remember him as a man who lived his life with a steadfast sense of purpose. His actions, whether in the line of duty or in his personal life, were always guided by a deep-seated courage. Gary's selfless nature was evident in the way he put others before himself, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear.
