Jean Toy Mcculloch

April 20, 1925 — June 5, 2024

Salem

Jean McCulloch passed away peacefully in Salem, Ohio on June 5,2024. Born on April 20,1925, in Pittsburgh, PA, Jean was the beloved daughter of the late Robert J. Harry and Elizabeth T. Harry. Her journey through life was marked by dedication to family, community service, and a lifelong pursuit of knowledge.

Jean's early years were spent in Pittsburgh, until age five, when her family moved to Alliance, Ohio. She graduated from Alliance High School and continued her education at Northwestern University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1947.

On November 15, 1950, Jean married Robert S. McCulloch, Jr., and their union was blessed with four sons: Robert S. McCulloch III (Deborah), John Harry McCulloch (Josee), Mark William McCulloch, and William Marshall McCulloch (Michael Cicora).

Jean's dedication to her family was accompanied by her commitment to her community. She was a member and past senior warden of the Episcopal Church of our Saviour in Salem and served as a co-founder and past president of Mobile Meals of Salem. Her affiliations extended to the Community Concert Association and the Salem YWCA, where she served as a board member. She also served as a past president of the Traveler's Club and a member of the Charles DIckens Society of Pittsburgh.

Jean had an affinity for art and used a variety of art media. She was a voracious reader-her favorites being Dickens, Tolstoy, and Thomas Hardy. She enjoyed playing the flute. Over her life she traveled extensively and was always looking forward to her next trip. A diligent diarist, Jean recorded much of her life in Salem and travels abroad, and later turned these entertaining chronicles into books that she shared with her family.

Jean's legacy is carried on by her sons and their families, including grandchildren, Robert S. McCulloch IV (Carla Ruas), Meredith Loring McCulloch, John Michael Haig McCulloch, Harrison Paul McCulloch, John Harry McCulloch Jr., step-granddaughter, Angela Iozzo, and great grandchildren Sophia and Joanna McCulloch and Ellington McCollum Pease.

Jean's departure was preceded by the loss of her husband, Robert S. McCulloch Jr., her parents Robert J. Harry and Elizabeth T. Harry, and her sisters Elizabeth Rennels and Dorothy Nichols Gibson. The passing of Jean McCulloch marks the end of an era, as the majority of her friends predeceased her.
