Joan Christine (Marschinke) Sheen joined the Church Eternal on Sunday, July 31, 2016. Joan was born in Oil City, Pennsylvania, on May 26, 1925. The family moved to Alliance, Ohio, in 1935 and Joan graduated from Alliance School. She completed two years at Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, and returned to alliance to work as a teller for the former Mount Union Bank. She met her husband, George, while square dancing at Pointview Dance Hall, Salem, Ohio. George and Joan were married September 10, 1950.

George and Joan raised four children and Joan returned to college work to become a teacher in 1971. She graduated from Kent State University in 1974 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and began fulltime teaching for the Minerva School System. Joan taught 2nd grade for 18 years in New Franklin and Robertsville Elementary Schools. She retired in 1992. Joan’s hobbies included square dancing with George, bus tours around the country, needlework, and quilting. She hand-quilted wedding quilts for grandchildren and completed several pieced family heirloom quilts. Several of her quilts were shown at the Canfield Fair and received recognition.

Joan was active in civic organizations including the Knox Township Mother’s Club, Cub Scout Den Mother and as a founding member of the West Branch Ladies Ruritan Club. Joan was active in church activities, serving on committees, participating in mission trips, and teaching Sunday school classes. She was currently a member of the First Baptist Church of Alliance.

Joan is survived by her husband, George, celebrating 65 years of marriage, her children, Martha (David) Daniels, Raymond (Holly) Sheen, Kenneth (Michelle) Sheen, and Norman (Debra) Sheen, 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents Joan was preceded in death by two brothers Charles and Edward.

Calling hours will be Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Gednetz-Ruzek-Brown Funeral Home in Sebring, Ohio, from 6-8 PM. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 5, 2016, at First Baptist Church, 1659 W. State Street, Alliance, Ohio, at 11:00 AM with Pastor Steve Rhodes officiating. Friends may greet one hour before the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund or West Branch Ladies Ruritan Scholarship Fund, 136 Heritage Drive, Beloit, Ohio, 44609.
