John Hammond

John W. Hammond Jr., 85 of North Benton passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at his home. John was born in North Benton on May 8, 1929, the son of the late John Wilmer and Helen Margaret (Hughes) Hammond and lived his entire life in the same house. Mr. Hammond was a graduate of The Ohio State University and served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. He was a member of North Benton Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, a deacon, and sang in the Chancel Choir. John was a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity, the Ohio Fair Managers Association, the Farm Bureau "Pros & Cons" Council, Smith Grange, 4-H member, a past member of Beloit and Goshen Ruritans, and served as past president of Goshen Ruritan. He served as a board member for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association, Central Ohio Breeding Association, and the Mahoning County Farm Bureau Federation. He was a director on the Canfield Fair Board for thirty-five years in charge of the "Sheep and Swine Departments", tractor pulls and was instrumental in getting the pulling track built. As a dairy farmer, John loved every aspect of farming; he was a proud Buckeye football fan, an avid reader, a gifted singer who sang as a soloist for many weddings and liked to do crossword puzzles.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Sylvia Jean (Vickers) Hammond whom he married on March 13, 1954, a daughter Rebecca (Earl) Wilson of North Benton, a son, Michael (Colleen) Hammond of North Benton; two grandchildren, Christina (Tim) Cole of Canton, and Jonathan (Jordan) Wilson of Salem; two great grandchildren, Ariana Cole and Jarrett Wilson. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother James "Jim" Hammond.
A funeral service will take place at 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at North Benton Presbyterian Church with Rev. Herb Goetz officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 PM on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the funeral home and the hour prior to the service on Thursday from 12-1 PM at the church. Burial will take place in Highland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in John's honor to North Benton Presbyterian Church, 19070 North Benton West Rd., North Benton, OH 44449 or Alliance VNA/Hospice 885 S.
