John R. Smith

John R. Smith, 81, of Salem, passed away at 2:11 p.m. Wednesday at his home. He was born June 27, 1924 in Greenford to the late John George and Maude (Feicht) Smith. John was employed by Hunt Valve as an assembler and was a US Army Veteran; serving during WWII he was a Prisoner Of War for 10 months in Germany and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of the Rogers Assembly of God a Life member of the DAV, a member of the Mahoning Valley Ex-POW group and the National American Ex-POWs. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Betty (Donley) Smith, two sons Richard Smith of Guilford Lake and Tim (Joyce) Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC, three daughters Nancy (Gary) Skeens of Warren, Kathy (Mark) Shaffer and Lisa (Ron) Gorcheff both of Salem, 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, he is also survived by a brother William H. Smith of Las Vegas and a sister Annetta Selway of Washingtonville. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter Charity Skeens, a grandson Ricky Reeves, a brother James Oscar and a sister Jeanette Kyser. Services will be held Saturday at the Rogers Assembly of God at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Paul Wright officiating. Friends may call Friday at the Brown Funeral Home in Salem from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery in Salem. Military Honors will be provided for Mr. Smith Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. by the Salem AMVETS and VFW Honor Guard.
