John Walters

John Melvin Walters 83, of Salem died Thursday morning at Salem Community Hospital. John was born in Salem on September 4, 1925 the son of the late John and Dorothy (Lippert) Walters. He lived in Deerfield for 17 years and then returned to Salem to spend the rest of his life. He first worked as a Caster for Salem China then worked for Food Haul as a Washer and finally John retired as a Road Foreman for Perry Township. He served in the US Army and was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge receiving the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Salem Eagles and the Salem VFW. Mr. Walters is survived by his daughter, Yvonne (Ken Stearns) Jones of Beloit, three grandchildren; Shawn Jones of Columbus, Shani (Todd) O’Brien of Florida and Timothy “TJ” (Tiffany) Jones Jr. of Beloit, three great grandchildren; Katelyn and Madelyn Murphy and Caiden Jones. John is also survived by two sisters; Jean Ritchie and Shirley Dellinger both of Warren and a brother Jerry (Lee) Walter of Cortland. John was preceded in death by; his parents, his wife Elsie Walters who died in 2003, son-in-law Timothy E. Jones Sr. in 1978, a great grandson Logan T. Jones in 2006 and two brothers-in-law Carmen Ritchie and Robert Dellinger. Services will be held on Sunday at 3:00 PM at Brown Funeral Home with Pastor Cheryl Vanatsky of the Robbins United Methodist Church officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Salem Honor Guard. Friends may call at the funeral home the hour prior to the service on Sunday. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park. Memorial donations can be made in John’s honor to; “Project Hello” c/o Salem Community Hospital 1995 East State Street, Salem, OH 44460.
