Minerva Burkey

December 24, 1918 — January 25, 2013

Minerva Jane “Aunt Sis” Burkey, 94, of Sebring passed away on Friday, January 25, 2013, following an extended illness, knowing she is spending eternity in paradise with her Lord and Savior. Minerva was born in Youngstown, Ohio on December 24, 1918, the daughter of Ray and Lucy “Pearl” (Helsel) Bartholomew, and was raised in Mahoning County. She worked many years at The Strong Manufacturing Co., Ravenna Arsenal, Sebring Container and General Motors in Lordstown, where everyone knew her as “Mini”, where she was a member of the UAW Union #1714. She dedicated her life to the raising and upbringing of her children and family. She enjoyed gardening, fishing in Canada and being with her family. She enjoyed her grand and great grandchildren the most. Holiday visits were her favorite time, when family would get together to enjoy the best cooking around and stories of the past that laid the ground work for so many in her life. After retiring from GM on April 27, 1987, she enjoyed her home and garden, if she wasn’t outside working, something was wrong. As she aged, many medical issues set in and age caused her body to fail. Minerva will be missed so dearly by her family. Survivors include her daughter Nancy L. Anderson, son Edward S. Burkey and a special niece Sharon Rolland; 4 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many great great grandchildren. Minerva is also survived by three half sisters, a half brother and two stepdaughters. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of Glenn Burkey, a brother Roy “Red” Bartholomew, two grandsons and two stepsons. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday February 1, 2013 at 12:00 PM at Gednetz-Ruzek Funeral Home with Rodney Anderson officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday January 31, 2013 from 6-8 PM and two hours prior to the service on Friday. Burial will be in Hartzell Cemetery in North Benton. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Minerva’s honor to Hospice of the Valley 5190 Market Ave. Youngstown, OH 44512. Arrangements are by Gednetz-Ruzek Funeral Home. Friends may send condolences and sign the guest register online at www.grfuneralhome.com.
