Osea Evangeline Stanley

Osea Evangeline Stanley, 103 passed away peacefully the morning of March 1, 2011, at Ridgewood Healthcare. Evangeline was born June 17 of 1908. After attending Marion College, she taught in a one room school house for a few years. From the time of her marriage to Chester G. Stanley in 1928, she was a supportive pastor’s wife in Hughesville, Pa.; Newport News, Va., Byhalia, Alliance, Columbus, and Damascus, Ohio where Chester served as Superintendent of Missions before becoming the General Superintendent of the Ohio Yearly Meeting of Friends. Evangeline is known for her simple elegance, creativity, laughter, and her loving, gracious manner. She taught piano for many years, loving the interaction with each of her students. She also participated in the Damascus Garden Club as both a member and a creative participant, writing and presenting papers of special interest to the group. Creating and editing the Better Half to wives of pastors in the Yearly Meeting was another of her many gifts. In the last few years she has been best known for her peacefulness of spirit and her beautiful smiles. Evangeline leaves behind two sons and their wives: Dr. Gene E and Sandra Stanley of Hudson, FL., and Dr. James G. and Carol Stanley of Copley, OH; three grandchildren: Jill (Fred) Heyl of Zephyrhills, Florida, David Stanley of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and Linda (Jon) Rich of Wenham, Mass.; six great grandchildren: Captain Aaron Young of the USAF, Jake Danforth , Ben Danforth, Genevieve Evangeline Rich; Paige Stanley and Payton Stanley; and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends. She has been laid to rest at Damascus Cemetery. Rev. John Ryser officiated at a private graveside service. A memorial service and celebration of Evangeline’s life will be held at the Damascus Friends Church on April 9, 2011.
