Richard David McDevitt, 86, of Salem passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, May 18, 2012. Richard was born in East Liverpool on July 3, 1925 the son of the late Arthur and Aida (Hindes) McDevitt, he was a WWII Navy Veteran serving as a Gunners Mate. Mr. McDevitt worked for Kaiser Refractories for 22 years and later on in 1980 he became the owner operator of InstaCopy in Salem until his retirement after 20 years. He was a past member of the VFW and Amvets, played Minor League Baseball for the Cardinals in the Carolina League; but he especially enjoyed going to the Farm in Little Cooley, PA with his friends and family. Survivors include his wife of 64 years Charlotte G. (Pugh) McDevitt of Salem whom he married on March 27, 1948, a daughter Susan (Bill) Kane of Canfield, a son Doug McDevitt of Salem, a daughter Diane (Larry) Karabin of Austintown, a son Brad McDevitt of Salem, seven grandchildren; Shannon (Paul) Pfahler, Kelly (Greg) Williams, Mark Karabin, Timothy Karabin, Evan Brothers, Katie McDevitt, Maggie McDevitt and four great grandchildren; Brenna and Patrick Pfahler, Alex DiThomas and Troy Williams. He is also survived by six brothers and sisters; Kate Maloney, Lucille Smith, Elsie Jenkins, Jim McDevitt, Hannah Flynn and Gary McDevitt. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Mary McDevitt, brother Arthur “Bud” McDevitt, brother Bob McDevitt and two sisters Pat Culp and June Simcox. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 2:00PM at The First Presbyterian Church in Salem with Rev. Meta S. Cramer officiating. A time of visitation will take place the hour prior to the service at the church. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made in Richard’s honor to The First Presbyterian Church 436 East 2nd Street Salem, OH 44460 or Hospice of the Valley 5190 Market St, Youngstown, OH 44512.
