Robert Emery Shively

March 17, 1927 — August 1, 2023

Robert E. Shively, born March 17, 1927 in Sebring, Ohio, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2023, in Canandaigua, New York. As a man of honor, courage, and dedication, he lived a fulfilling life brimming with love, joy, and adventure.

Bob was the son of the late Robert V. Shively and Roxie (Koon) Shively. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne (Gfeller) Shively, whom he married on August 26, 1956, and who passed away in 2017. He was also predeceased by his sisters Wanda, Donna, Joan, and his brother Chuck. Bob's legacy will be carried forward by his son, Jim (Sue) Shively, his three grandchildren, Melyssa (Chase) Roberts, Luke (Samantha Betz) Shively, Victoria Shively, and his great-grandson, Austin Roberts.

Bob enlisted in the Navy at the tender age of 17, serving from May 2, 1945 to August 9, 1946. His training at Sampson Naval Base on Seneca Lake in New York and PT boat training prepared him for deployment. However, the war ended before he was to see action. His duties changed, and he was tasked with assisting his fellow midshipman in preparing for the transport of supplies and equipment home at the end of World War II.

Upon returning home after his service, Bob met the love of his life, Joanne, at a local dance in Sebring, Ohio. This marked the beginning of a beautiful journey of love and companionship that spanned over six decades. Bob was compassionate and a joyful caregiver for his wife. He initially worked as a bricklayer before embarking on a long and rewarding career with Chrysler. He retired as a supervisor after a commendable 36 years at the Twinsburg stamping facility.

Bob was known for his varied interests and hobbies. He was an exceptional show water skier for Myers Lake and was a proud member of the Myers Lake Ski Club. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed fishing, billiards, roller skating, tennis, snow skiing, and horse shoes. His love for water skiing was only surpassed by his passion for dancing. These pursuits not only brought him immense joy, but also brought him closer to his friends and family. This created a host of cherished friendships and memories. In addition to his adventerous hobbies, Bob was also a friend to animals having a particularly special bond with his cat, Kitty. When asked for one word to describe Bob, his family unanimously answered "fun" as they remember his easy-going, free spirit.

May his enduring spirit continue to guide and inspire his loved ones. His life was a journey well-traveled and well-lived, and his memory will forever be a treasure to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
