Ruth Jane Sobotka, 89 of Sebring passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Ruth was born in Sebring on November 28, 1924 the daughter of the late Anthony and Rhoda (Brooks) Dawson. A lifelong area resident, living in the same home for 79 years, she was a 1942 graduate of Sebring McKinley High School, worked at Royal China and was owner/co-owner/operator of Cornie’s TV in Salem which opened in 1953 and Cornie’s Steakhouse in Alliance which opened in 1968. Ruth was a member of GAA in high school, lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time at Berlin Lake at their cottage with family and friends, entertaining, playing cards (especially euchre), running the VFW euchre nights and visiting mountaineer. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed going to Special thanks to Donna Specht and Dee Smith for all of their loving care this past year and the AVNA/Hospice.
Survivors include her two sons; Jim (Connie) Sobotka of Alliance, Tom (Linda) Sobotka of Belleview, Florida; two daughters Pam (Mike) Vargo of Alliance, Tammie (Greg) Skivolocke of Alliance, six grandchildren; Matthew Sobotka, Andrew Sobotka, Christine Maguire, Jacob and Ally Vargo, Gina (Joe) Gallina and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two sister in laws Edith Dawson of Sebring and Lillian Dawson of Beloit. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Cornie Sobotka whom she married on July 22, 1949 and who died on July 17, 1976, four brothers, Jay, Gordon, Paul and Tony and a sister Elizabeth.
A funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Gednetz-Ruzek funeral home with Ray Harris officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 PM on Monday June 16, 2014 at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Memorial contributions can be made in Ruth’s honor to the charity of the donor’s choice. Friends may send condolences and sign the guest register online at www.grfuneralhome.com.
