Thelma Thomas

Thelma E. Thomas, 103, of Sebring and formerly of Salem passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Crandall Medical Center. Thelma was born in Pittsburgh, PA on October 17, 1909, the daughter of the late Martin and Emma (Shingo) Thomas. She was a 1926 graduate of Blairsville High School and was also a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Kent State University. Ms. Thomas taught school in Derry Township, Westmorland County, Pennsylvania before moving to Salem in 1940. She then taught at Prospect School and was the Principal of Buckeye School retiring in 1975. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Salem and attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Sebring after moving to Copeland Oaks, when she was able. Thelma was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Iota Chapter in Columbiana County, a Life Member of the Columbiana County Retired Teachers Association and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. She was a Past Matron and Life Member of Blairsville, PA Order of the Eastern Star. Ms. Thomas is survived by five nieces and nephews; Mrs. Janet (Philip) Jerauld of Rock Hill, SC, Mrs. Deborah (John) Sopko of Chattanooga, TN, Gary Thomas of Canton,OH, Larry Thomas of Oxford NC and Randall Thomas of Lewis Center, OH. She is also survived by 9 great and 4 great great nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers Edward and Clyde. A funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Brown Funeral Home in Salem with Pastor Connie Sassanella officiating at 11:00 AM. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday the hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in St. Peters Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA.
